II. LAYERED INORGANIC HOST MATERIALS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF MOLECULAR ASSEMBLIES... 

Recently, a set of papers about polymerization in nanopartides of emulsion appeared. Compartmentalization in ATRP in dispersed systems was investigated and the synthesis of polymers by intercalating monomers in layered inorganic hosts, mainly layered silicates, was described. 

The assembly of biopolymers with inorganic layered solids can lead to bionanocomposites in which the biopolymer becomes intercalated between the layers of the inorganic hosts [3]. The intercalation is a complex process that may simultaneously involve several mechanisms. Thus, in addition to hydrogen bonding, it has been invoked that certain biopolymers interact with the inorganic layers through... 

PCH materials offer new opportunities for the rational design of heterogeneous catalyst systems, because the pore size distributions are in the supermicropore to small mesopore range (14-25A) and chemical functionality (e.g., acidity) can be introduced by adjusting the composition of the layered silicate host. The approach to designing PCH materials is based on the use of intercalated quaternary ammonium cations and neutral amines as co-surfactants to direct the interlamellar hydrolysis and condensation polymerization of neutral inorganic precursor (for example, tetraethylorthosilicate, TEOS) within the galleries of an ionic lamellar solid.

Intensive research on these hybrid analogs of micelles or vesicles has already accomplished rather sophisticated functions as presented in Chapter 22. 

Composites have been prepared by rather different methods due to the great variety of inorganic and organic materials used. (See also Sect. 2.5. and Chap. 7) Lamellar nanocomposites consisting of layered inorganic compounds and conducting polymers display novel properties which result from the molecular-level interactions of two dissimilar chemical components. Intercalation compounds contain a rigid bidimensional crystalline lattice (matrix) which can incorporate molecular or ionic species between the layers to form a peculiar type of host-guest complex [297-299]. Intercalation of metallocenes into various inorganic hosts lattices has been the subject of much attention in recent years [300-304]. 

The method consist of quantitative removal of a poisoner from an inorganic host, by repeated dissolution. Such investigations could be important for the analysis of polymers in these hybrid materials. Although studies on the extraction of polymers from layered nanocomposites have been reported, " 9 this field is poorly imderstood. Recently, rapid and quantitative extraction of PEO from the K((C2H40)4-M1 - t/2PS2 composite (M = Mn or Cd) with an aqueous tetraethylammonium salt under normal conditions has been carried out. This process was analyzed in detail and the kinetic regularities were revealed.
