Laser photocoagulation

Until recently, the only treatments for neovascular AMD were nonpharmacologic. Thermal laser photocoagulation reduces severe visual loss 2 to 5 years after the procedure, but leads to an immediate and permanent reduction in central vision. There is a 50% chance that leakage will recur in the next 2 years after the procedure.20,22... 

Laser photocoagulation has markedly improved sight preservation in diabetic patients.

Systemic glucocorticoid treatment can cause severe exacerbation of bullous exudative retinal detachment and lasting visual loss in some patients with idiopathic central serous chorioretinopathy (SEDA-20, 374 68). The atypical presentation of this condition can include peripheral retinal capillary nonperfusion and retinal neovascularization. The treatment of choice in patients with idiopathic central serous chorioretinopathy is laser photocoagulation.

An exploratory analysis of results from the phase III study was undertaken in patients with specifically defined early disease who received injections of 0.3 mg. Group 1 was characterized by four criteria lesion size less than two disk areas, baseline visual acuity of equal to or better than 54 EDTRS letters, no prior PDT or thermal laser photocoagulation to the lesion, and absence of scarring or atrophy within the lesion.
