The electrodeposition of lanthanum. La, has been attempted in neutral and acidic EMICI-AICI3 ionic liquids [70, 71]. Lanthanum trichloride, LaCl3, is soluble in the acidic ionic liquid. The solubility of LaCl3 in the acidic ionic liquid containing AICI3 at 66.7 mol% is reported as 45 mmol kg at 25°C. The deposition of metallic La is not conhrmed, while the reduction of a trivalent lanthanum species is suggested in the presence of SOCI2. The electrodeposition of Al-La alloys has been also examined in the acidic ionic liquid where the content of La in the Al-La alloys is less than 0.1 at%. [Pg.122]

Methods used for concentrating plutonium in a sample by a carrier are often specific to one oxidation state of the plutonium. For example, the classical bismuth phosphate-lanthanum fluoride method of concentrating plutonium from urine samples is specific to plutonium in the tri- and tetravalent states and will leave plutonium(VI) in solution. The fate of the various oxidation states of plutonium in man is not well understood and analysis procedures must insure reduction or oxidation of plutonium into appropriate oxidation states. Liver and kidney samples may contain metals (e.g., iron) which may greatly reduce chemical yields during the final electrodeposition step (Bernhardt 1976). [Pg.119]

Micro amounts of Pu are isolated by lanthanum fluoride coprecipitation, thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) extraction, and electrodeposition. The a activity is measured by proportional counting or by autoradiography. [Pg.155]
