Language deficits

The patient may not be able to reliably report the history owing to cognitive or language deficits. A reliable history may have to come from a family member or another witness. 

Cognitive deficits in Alzheimer s disease Attention deficits are a core feature of Alzheimer s disease (Lawrence and Sahakian 1995). Problems arise primarily from divided and disengaging/shifting attention and less from focusing of attention (Nebes 1997). Language deficits are seen early in the course of Alzheimer s disease. While grammar is relatively intact, there is a deficit in expression and comprehension of semantic meaning. 

Early detection of language deficits allowed ameliorative intervention aimed at improving academic performance and social adaptation in preschool and school-aged children.

Fetal alcohol exposure, for example, causes physical, neurological, and psychological impairments that often lead to social maladjustment and subsequent disruptive, violent, and eventually criminal behavior.91 A common FASD impairment is a language deficit that results in poor social communication and consequent social maladjustment.92 Low IQ caused by FASD exacerbates any impairment and makes social maladjustment more likely. 

The systems mainly involved are auditory, motor and intellectual. The language deficit results from a combination of deafness and intellectual deficit, as well as defective motor control of speech. The motor deficit is characterized by predominantly proximal rigidity and spasticity that implies extra-pyramidal more than pyramidal dysfunction.
