Macromolecular Surface Films, Charged Films, and Langmuir-Blodgett Layers... [Pg.537]

From what you know about wetting, contact angles, and spread monolayers, explain why a Langmuir-Blodgett layer will deposit as a F type if there are nonpolar fatty acids, yet will switch to a Z-type deposition if bipolar alcohols or amines are added (see Refs. 175, 176). What defines the critical contact angle for the deposition change ... [Pg.563]

The data show that SSIMS can be used as a tool for characterizing the different steps in the production of biosensors, or even for sequencing. Similarly, SSIMS can be used to solve a variety of problems in bioanalytical chemistry, e. g. screening of combinatorial libraries, characterizing Langmuir-Blodgett layers, etc. [Pg.101]

The very popular applications of the adsorption potential measurements are those dealing with the surface potential changes at the water-air and water-hydrocarbon interfaces when a monolayer film is formed by an adsorbed substance. Phospholipid mono-layers, for instance, formed at such interfaces have been extensively used to study the surface properties of the monolayers, which are expected to represent, to some extent, the surface properties of bilayers, and biological, as well as various artificial membranes. An interest in a number of applications of the ordered thin organic films, e.g., Langmuir-Blodgett layers, dominated the insoluble monolayer research activity during the last decade. [Pg.34]

The microheterogenous and nanoheterogenous (mesoscopic) liquid-liquid systems may be concisely called the small systems. They comprise the micro- and nanodomains, described in colloidal chemistry as a variety of structures, e.g., micelles, rods, disks, vesicles, microemulsions, monolayers, and Langmuir Blodgett layers [6,17 19,70]. [Pg.35]

Langmuir monolayers play some part in the preparation of multi-layer systems, now mostly referred to as self-assembled monolayers or multilayers (SAM s). However, this role is modest because it is difficult to make Langmuir-Blodgett layers sufficiently perfect and stable to function in new materials, such as electronic and bio-mimetic devices. One approach of stabilizing LB films is by working with molecules having double bonds that, after deposition, are polymerized. Such layers are stable enough to serve as a substrate for protein adsorption ). [Pg.445]
