Thomas A. Edison built the first prototype of his "speaking machine" in 1877. At first, Edison did not think his phonograph would record music. But after he tested the prototype and used his results to make changes, his design was successful. Eventually, people heard the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb" coming from Edison s machine. 

The petition was detected by an informer when it was read out to the General Baptist congregation of Thomas Lambe (see pp. 205-6) at their regular Sunday meeting on 14 March 1647.
