On the basis of the trend illustrated in Fig. 2, it is evident that the measured value of 21 for any aqueous Cu(II/I) system can be used to estimate the stability constant of the Cu L complex within about 2 orders of magnitude. This is a useful tool since only a limited number of Cu L stability constants have been determined in aqueous solution, whereas a large array... [Pg.1023]

A similar linear relationship between Cu(II/I) potential values and logarithmic Cu" L stabiKty constants may exist in non-aqueous solvents, but such a relationship has not been adequately established. Measurements conducted in our laboratories on a variety of polythioether complexes have shown that the Cu"L stability constants tend to increase by approximately 10 on going from water to acetonitrile, whereas the Cu L stability constants tend to decrease by a similar order of magnitude [54]. These values obviously reflect the preference of Cu (I I) to be solvated by water and the corresponding preference of Cu(I) to be coordinated to acetonitrile [111]. [Pg.1023]

However, two distinctly different paths for this process were considered for [260], one involving only tertiary ions and another including structures with positive charge at the secondary carbon. At low temperature only the tertiary path is of importance, since C(l) stabilizes positive charge better than C(5) in the bridge flipping process (cf. structure [257] which equilibrates C(4) with C(6), C(3) with C(7) and the 8- and S -CH, groups, but which leaves the other positions unaffected (165). When the temperature is raised an appreciable... [Pg.307]
