The success of the Sasol project is attributed to the availabiUty of cheap coal and the rehabiUty of the selected components. Plants using Lurgi or Koppers-Totzek gasifiers for making chemicals are located in AustraUa, Turkey, Greece, India, and Yugoslavia, among other countries. 

As mentioned above, the Koppers-Totzek gasifier of powdery coal [4, 5], the Stagnation jet mixer [14] and the Trost jet mill [20] are practical examples of the successful application of impinging streams. Apart from these, very few industrial applications of impinging streams had been by the end of the last century, [9, 21], The following may account for the fact that the application of impinging streams has progressed so slowly ... 

Impinging Streams (IS) is a novel technical method. As a scientific concept, it was first presented by Elperin in 1961, while its earliest emergence can be traced back to the development and application of the Koppers-Totzek gasifier in 1953. 

Coal may be gasified in situ, i.e. before extraction. If the coal has already been mined, the traditional methods include the Lurgi fixed-bed gasifier (providing gas under pressure from non-caking coal at a conversion efficiency as low as 55%) and the Koppers-Totzek gasifier (oxygen input, gas at... 

A fractionator is employed to subdivide the overhead stream into (1) gases, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and methane (2) light oil (3) heavy oil and (4) water. Most of the char is removed from the base of the reactor, quenched with water, and cooled. The char can then be used as a feed to a Koppers-Totzek gasifier and reacted with oxygen and steam to produce hydrogen for the process. 

Production of more than 2,000 t/d ammonia and 100 t/d methanol from coal gas produced in 14 Koppers-Totzek gasifiers at chemical plants in India, South Africa, and Zambia...
