The sign of the Kerr ellipticity eK is defined as positive if the electric field of the reflected beam rotates in the same direction as the electric current that can be associated with the sample magnetization M, i.e. eK is positive if the rotation vector that can be associated with the handedness of the reflected polarization is parallel to M. The sign of the Kerr rotation polarization axis after reflection is parallel to M, too. [Pg.499]

Aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene isomers) are a major class of organic compounds associated with the urban environment and model calculations appear to indicate that they might contribute more than 30 % of the photo-oxidant formation in urban areas. However, the mechanisms currently used in models of tropospheric chemistry to describe the photo-oxidation of aromatic compounds are highly speculative. Studies within LACTOZ have involved both direct and smog chamber investigations and have provided data on many different aspects of the mechanisms for oxidation of aromatic compounds related to tropospheric ozone and oxidant formation. Kerr effect n. When plane polarized light is incident on the pole of an electromagnet, polished so as to act like a mirror, the plane of polarization of the reflected light is not the same when the magnet is on as when it is off . First proposed by Barrer [15] and Kerr [16,17], and later by many others [18], nucleation is the result of polymerization of aluminate-silicate-tetrahedral and possibly more complex ions in the liquid phase. When the current of nuclei exceeds a critical size, fast crystal growth starts, supplied continuously with silicate and aluminate units from gel dissolution. Aluminosilicate species found in solution by Raman and Si-NMR spectroscopy [19—21] and the possibility of obtaining zeolite directly from liquid phase, omitting gel stage [22], favor this concept. [Pg.23]
