Kaneka Corp., a Japanese chemical company has established an efficient radioactive decontamination strategy by using their biosurfactant, called Kaneka Surfactin, which is composed of surfactin. They successfully carried out decontamination of areas affected by the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant disaster. Efficient surface and detergent activity of surfactin make it eliminates radioactive cesium and other contaminants from the polluted area. Strategy adopted by Kaneka Corp. for radioactive decontamination of roads using surfactin solution is shown in Figure 14.8. 

Procter Gamble has developed a family of PHAs known as Nodax . P G plans to license different aspects of the production and application of Nodax. P G and Kaneka Corp. in Japan are jointly developing PHAs, including poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH). The companies are producing PHBH at a rate of 50 kg/week at two locations in the United States and are considering sites in Europe and in Asia for a 30,000 metric tons per year plant (6). 

Allyl-terminated linear and triarm star PIBs and epoxy and hydroxy telechelics therefrom have been reported by Ivan and Kermedy. Allyl functional PIBs were obtained in a simple one pot procedure involving living IB polymerization using TiCU as coinitiator followed by end-quenching with ATMS. This method is commercially employed by Kaneka Corp. (lapan) for the synthesis of allyl telechelic PIB, a precursor to moisture curable PIBs. The procedure was based on earlier reports by Wilczek and Kennedy that demonstrated quantitative allylation of PIB-Cl by ATMS in the presence of Et2AlCl or TiCh.
