Jury selection

In fact, the procedure of jury selection in the U.S. system of civil law, a procedure known as uoir dire, typically leads to the dismissal of those candidates for jury duty who profess an expertise in a technical subject relevant to the case. Such dismissals occur because one of the attorneys, either for the defense or the plaintiff, believes that these candidates are potential threats to the authority of certain expert witnesses who may be called in the case. 

Jury Selection—If the trial is to be by jury (rather than de novo or a bench trial which mean the case is heard and decided by a judge only), the jury must be selected. Usually local citizens are summoned to the courthouse and the attorneys for both sides questions the individuals as to their background, bias, and other factors. The attorneys for both sides, as well as the judge, can eliminate potential jurors from the pool until the requisite numbers of jurors are seated to hear the case. 

Jury selection and the voir dire process is another area forensic psychologists study. Voir dire is the process where attorneys from both sides of a case question the jury to inform decisions about selection. This process was developed to ensure fair trials for those accused, but it is often considered strategically. Demographic and social information is often used to make guesses based on statistical tendencies of particular groups. Attitudinal questions assess what the jurors themselves admit to in terms of their beliefs on issues related to the case. Psychologists study this process and the ability to predict jury decisions. 

Jury Selection One study of grand juries in Alameda County, California, compared the demographic characteristics of jurors with the general population, to see if jury panels were representative. The results for age are shown below. The investigators wanted to know if the 66 jurors were selected at random from the population of Alameda County. (Only persons over 21 are considered the county age distribution is known from Public Health Department data.) The study was published in the UCLA Law Review. 

As a result of increased exposure to the work of forensic scientists, juror selection has become more difficult, since jurors now expect prosecutors to provide evidence as easily and as rapidly as seen on television. In selecting a jury panel, lawyers are aware that these television programs may influence jurors (called the CSI effect ) and the absence of expected evidence might work against the prosecutor in criminal cases.

Three parameters, organic carbon-water partition coefficient (Koc)y Henry s law constant (Ku), and the biological half-life (ti/2). were used by Jury and coworkers [87-90] in a model assessing the downward movement of selected organic compounds after incorporation into surface soil. In this model, the time required for organic chemicals to travel a distance through surface soil by both convective (t ) and diffusive to) movements were assessed using Eqs. 4 and 5 ... 

In order to inspire students to become even more creative, Henkel established a special award for the best use of adhesive throughout the entire contest. Submissions are judged on the attractiveness and creativity of the bonding application, the way the adhesive was selected and verified, the presentation made to the jury, and the students knowledge about bonding technologies.

Interview defensively — Remember that the sole purpose of any job interview is to select the best qualified candidate to fill the available position. Keep all questions job-related. Before posing a question or making a comment to the candidate, ask yourself, How would this question or conunent appear to a jury in a subsequent employment discrimination action If you have any doubts, do not ask the question or make the comment.
