A series of rules describing the breaking, / B,and joining, J, probabilities must be selected to operate the cellular automata model. The study of Kier was driven by the rules shown in Table 6.6, where Si and S2 are the two solutes, B, the stationary cells, and W, the solvent (water). The boundary cells, E, of the grid are parameterized to be noninteractive with the water and solutes, i.e., / b(WE) = F b(SE) = 1.0 and J(WE) = J(SE) = 0. The information about the gravity parameters is found in Chapter 2. A computational model will be developed for numerous water quality parameters in the Platte River, Nebraska. In many locations, this river splits into multiple channels that are joined back together downstream. One significant split is the Kearney Canal diversion, illustrated in Figure E6.7.1, where 20% of the flow splits off into a second river at the city of Overton, only to return 20 km downstream at the city of Kearney. A tracer pulse was put into the river at location x = 0 and time t = 0, upstream of the diversion. Downstream of the diversion s return, the pulse at location x = 25 km is given in Figure E6.7.2. Develop a model for this reach that contains equal size tanks-in-series for the main channel and a similar number of tanks-in-series with the addition of a possible plug flow for the side channel, as illustrated in Figure E6.7.3. [Pg.137]

The distribution of defects in mesophases is often regular, owing to their fluidity, and this introduces pattern repeats. For instance, square polygonal fields are frequent in smectics and cholesteric liquids. Such repeats occur on different scales - at the level of structural units or even at the molecular level. Several types of amphiphilic mesophase can be considered as made of defects . In many examples the defect enters the architecture of a unit cell in a three-dimensional array and the mesophase forms a crystal of defects [119]. Such a situation is found in certain cubic phases in water-lipid systems [120] and in blue phases [121] (see Chap. XII of Vol. 2 of this Handbook). Several blue phases have been modeled as being cubic centred lattices of disclinations in a cholesteric matrix . Mobius disclinations are assumed to join in groups of 4x4 or 8x8, but in nematics or in large-pitch cholesterics such junctions between thin threads are unstable and correspond to brief steps in recombinations. An isotropic droplet or a Ginsburg decrease to zero of the order parameter probably stabilizes these junctions in blue phases. [Pg.483]
