John Priestly

From Columbus onward, European explorers of Central and South Ameriea found the natives exploiting the elastie and water resistant properties of the dried latex from certain trees. The indigenous peoples already knew how to crudely waterproof fabrics and boots by coating them with latex and then drying. They also rolled dried latex into the bouncing balls used for sport. This dried latex became quite a curiosity in Europe, especially among the natinal scientists. It received the name rubber in 1770 when John Priestly discovered that it could rub out pencil marks. [Pg.197]

Results. Values computed on the John von Neumann Center s Control Data Corporation Cyber 205 are displayed and compared to literature results for other model-chains in Figure 3. Squares indicate values obtained in our Monte Carlo simulations, while diamonds are results of Priest s (12) analytical approximation for very narrow pores. [Pg.170]

A more beautiful or precious morsel of ethics I have never seen. He told John Adams that he excised pure principles which Jesus taught, from the artificial vestments in which they have been muffled by priests, who have travestied them into various forms as instruments of riches and power for themselves. ... [Pg.131]

Clay samples were rehydrated with deionized water, formed into small tiles (1.5 x 1.5 x 4 cm), dried at 100 °C overnight, and fired in an oxidizing environment to 800 °C. Brick samples were analyzed from four 17th century houses (St John s, St. Peter s, the Priest s House, and Van Sweringen s ordinary), the 1674 State House, and the brick Chapel. All brick and experimental tiles were cleaned by abrading away the outer surfaces, rinsed in DI water, allowed to air dry, and then crushed for encapsulation for INAA. [Pg.368]

The Knave in the pack of cards, which, when trump, takes both King and Queen, is a symbol of Salt. He or IT is a sort of Priest uniting the two active principles - or you may say he stimulates action between them, that is between two negative (inert) principles, thus ultimately bringing the Work to perfection. John (I John 5.7, 8) alludes to this correspondence when he says "There are three that bear record in heaven the Father, the Word and the Holy Ghost, and there are three that bear witness on earth the spirit, the water and the blood, and these three agree in one."... [Pg.85]

Alchemy appears in the Canterbury Tales in the Canon sYeoman s Tale , in which the yeoman relates the story of his master s futile quest for transmutation and subsequent swindling of a fellow priest. Given the detail of the story, it seems probable that Chaucer himself had studied alchemy, and may have even been a practitioner. His fi-iend John Gower may have also been involved... [Pg.117]

My family faced hard sacrifices to make my medical training possible. My older brother, John, was already enrolled in the Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, preparing to become, like my father, a priest in the Episcopal church. My younger brother, Peter, agreed to postpone law school. And my sister, Louise, still in high school, faced a greater burden of helping at home. [Pg.19]

Clearly, the ability to synthesize nanoparticles preceded the understanding of nanoscale phenomena. Systematic studies of nanoparticles began to appear as early as the seventeenth century. Antonio Neri, a Florentine glass maker and priest, describes the synthesis of colloidal gold in his 1612 treatise L Arte Vetraria. John Kunckel, revised and translated Neri s work into german in 1689. Kunckel is often credited with the discovery that glass can be colored red by addition of gold. [Pg.3]
