British geneticist Alec Jeffreys introduced technique for DNA fingerprinting to identify individuals. 

The multilocus method discovered by Alec Jeffreys has proved useful in a wide range of animal and plant species and is currently one of the most widely used fingerprinting methods in population studies. This method, using probes 33.6 and 33.15, is the only fingerprinting method for which a formal international quality control system is operated (Zeneca Cellmark Diagnostics), and offers a unique opportunity for the standardization of cell line quahty control procedures in widely distributed laboratories.

In 1985 a British chemist named Alec Jeffreys suggested that minisatellite sequences provide a means of identification, much like fingerprints. DNA fingerprinting has since gained prominence with law enforcement officials as a way to identify crime suspects.

Alec Jeffreys (1950- ), an English geneticist, discovered in the 1980s how to apply this principle to forensics. To do this, it is necessary to locate that portion of the DNA molecule in which the base sequence differs significantly from one individual to another. That part of the molecule is cut out by a "restrictive enzyme in much the same way that trypsin splits a protein molecule into fragments. The DNA sample obtained in this way from a suspect can be compared with that derived from blood, hair, semen, saliva, and so on, found at the scene of a violent crime.
