Jamaican ginger

As its name implies, peripheral neuropathy refers to damage to nerves outside the central nervous system. It is especially evident as damage to the motor nerves involved with voluntary muscle movement. Victims of peripheral neuropathy often have problems with movement and are afflicted with symptoms such as foot drag or Jake leg, a malady that got its name from toxic effects of contaminated Jamaican ginger.

At about this time (1931), an OTC potion called Jake poisoned hundreds of people. It was probably a peripheral neurotoxin due to an adulterant in an extract of Jamaican ginger Jake-leg became a recognized syndrome. While Jake the Peg , with an extra leg (i.e. an axillary crutch), became famous, it needed a much bigger disaster to move legislative and public opinion.
