A dominant influence of certain electronic configurations on the structure type is represented by the Jahn-Teller effect (173). It shall be discussed here only briefly. For further information the reader is referred to a review by Or gel and Dunitz (241) and as for the general base of ligand field theory to the books of Orgel (240) and Figgis (101). 

Following two earlier, more general studies of copper(II) coordination complexes (4,55), a comprehensive LFMM study of the Jahn-Teller effect in CunN6 systems was undertaken (36) based on a selection of structures from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) (56,57). AOM parameters had previously been derived based on ligand field analyses of d-d spectral data (32). Agreement between theory and experiment is good (Fig. 14). 

Much work on the theory of Jahn-Teller and pseudo-Jahn-Teller effects has been reported by Bersuker and co-workers. They have proved that the pJT effect is the only possible source of instabilities of high symmetry molecular systems in nondegenerate states. These researchers have investigated the pJT effect in many systems, including planar BFLf, CH4, BH3, CH3", NH3, octahedral metal complexes MHe (M = Sc3-, V, Cr), and a series of octahedral hexafluoride systems (45, 46, 49, 50).
