Jack-in-the-box

Another example of an unknown or unsuspected response is the astonished look of a young child when it first discovers that turning a crank on a box produces not only music but also the surprising jack-in-the-box .

The 1993 Jack-in-the-Box epidemic caused by E. coli, which received widespread media attention, brought concern for food protection and preparation into the national limelight. Hamburger meat contaminated in meat processing plants was identified as the possible source of infection. Over 400 people became ill and four children died as a result of consuming the contaminated meat (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1993). 

Bitunicate jack-in-the-box dehiscence (Fig. 11) (pyrenolichens, some discolichens) the exoascus ruptures at the tip or in a circle at a distance from the tip the endoascus is ejected and elongates carrying along the ascal contents. 

Copper powder (0.0520 g, 0.818 mmol), antimony(III) sulfide (0.0442 g, 0.130 mmol), elemental sulfur (0.0150 g, 0.467 mmol) and calcium chloride (0.0300 g, 0.270 mmol) are added to a quartz ampoule (7 mm o.d., 5 mm i.d.) approximately 9 cm in length inside an argon-filled glove box. The ampoule is then filled with distilled water until approximately 35-40% full and fitted to a vacuum line using an Ace-Thred tube adapter (model 5027, 7). A Dewar filled with liqN2 is placed on a lab jack and slowly raised until the water in the bottom tip of the ampoule begins to freeze. The stopcock to the vacuum line is then slowly opened to allow for the evacuation of the ampoule. The Dewar is gradually raised until all the water is frozen. Once the solution is completely frozen, the ampoule is sealed at a position...

As a proof-of-concept, the Lavigne group has investigated the sensor response for simple a,co-diamines with a chain lengths between two and six methylene groups. In addition, histamine was used as an analyte. The analysis was performed with the UV-Vis data obtained for a constant polymer concentration of 0.4mM, and for five different analyte concentrations between 0.5 and 5.0mM. The normalized absorption values at nine wavelengths were subjected to a LDA (see Glossary in Box 7.1). A jack-knifed classification matrix showed that the analyte can be identified with an accuracy of over 99% [23].
