A good source for getting a rapid overview of an unfamiliar class of compounds, for example, but now showing its age. There is a cumulative index to the whole second edition and supplements. It is available online at ScienceDirect.com. It is not known if a new edition is planned. 

Although not originally classified at the time as cooked food mutagens, several amino acid-derived iV-heterocyclic compounds were identified in cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) in the early 1960s 5//,10//-Dipyrrolo[l,2-a r,2 -(i] pyrazine-5,10-dione (pyrocoll) 1 by Mold et al. (2592) and 9H-pyrido[3,4-fc]indole (norharman) 11 and l-methyl-9-H-pyrido[3,4-fc ]indole (harman) 111 by Poindexter and Carpenter (2972) (Figure XVll.F-1). 

Only one fused ring IV-heterocyclic compound was listed by Johnstone and Plknmer (1971) as a tobacco smoke component the bicyclic compound, quinoline. 

Through subtle modification of the reaction mechanism, the scope of o-quinone-catalyzed aerobic oxidations has been expanded to secondary amines and JV-heterocyclic compounds as well [45-47]. Very recently. Jiao and co-woikers demonstrated a novel Cu-catalyzed direct nitrogenation of biphenyl halides for the direct synthesis of carbazoles 76, which are ubiquitous structural compounds in medicines or bioactive molecules (Scheme 7.52) [122]. A recyclable and inexpensive Cu-catalyst was successfully employed in iV-heterocyclic compound synthesis via tandem azidalion and C-H amination, which makes this protocol very practical and easy to handle. 

In 2013, Burgmann reported the CDC reaction between iV-heterocyclic compounds (21) and simple alkanes (22) (Scheme 8.5).
