Equipment used depends on the size and timing of the application. It may be applied with a sprinkling can, sprinkler system, or irrigation equipment, or the fumigant may be applied by spraying the soil surface and immediately flooding the area. The depth of the water seal (usually 1 to 4 inches of wetted soil) depends on the volatility of the fumigant. 

When the contact is intermittent, as in irrigation equipment made of aluminium, the shorter the contact time of the fertiliser solution, the lesser is the risk of pitting corrosion. Nevertheless, these installations should be rinsed carefully after being used with fertiliser solutions. 

Several crop uses are labelled for application by overhead sprinkler irrigation equipment. 

For addition of fertilizer to irrigation spray systems, complete water solubiHty, and hence use of the solution-type fertilizers, is essential. An additional requirement is that the fertilizer be of a composition that does not react with the normal mineral content ie, the hardness, of the irrigation water to form objectional scaling of equipment.
