Irregular operations

In the early days of cement manufacture the clinker was produced in shaft kilns (vertical kilns) which were manually charged and controlled It was a process involving strenuous physical labour and had the drawback of irregular operation, yielding a clinker of variable and often inferior quality. Besides, the capacity of such kilns was low. 

Conceptually, the problem of going from the time domain spectra in Figures 3.7(a)-3.9(a) to the frequency domain spectra in Figures 3.7(b)-3.9(b) is straightforward, at least in these cases because we knew the result before we started. Nevertheless, we can still visualize the breaking down of any time domain spectrum, however complex and irregular in appearance, into its component waves, each with its characteristic frequency and amplitude. Although we can visualize it, the process of Fourier transformation which actually carries it out is a mathematically complex operation. The mathematical principles will be discussed only briefly here. 

The constant height mode of operation results in a faster measurement. In this analysis, the tip height is maintained at a constant level above the surface and differences in tunneling current ate measured as the tip is scaimed across the surface. This approach is not as sensitive to surface irregularities as the constant current mode, but it does work well for relatively smooth surfaces. 

FBC ash is irregular, whereas PC ash, because it melts at the elevated operating temperatures, is spherical. This difference in shape influences baghouse design in three ways (I) FBC ash does not flow... 

The cavitation damage in this spacer was due to vibrations from operation of the engine. The localized nature of the damage in this case is an illustration of a common feature of cavitation. Pits formed by initial cavitation damage become preferred sites for the development of subsequent cavitation bubble formation due to the jagged, irregular contours of the pit. This tends to localize and intensify the cavitation process, especially in later stages of pit development. 

Bed limiters commonly are used with metal or plastic tower packings. The primary function of these devices is to prevent expansion of the packed bed, as well as to maintain the bed top surface level. In large diameter columns, the packed bed will not fluidize over the entire surface. Vapor surges fluidize random spots on the top of the bed so that after return to normal operation the bed top surface is quite irregular. Thus the liquid distribution can be effected by such an occurrence. 

Motion of fluids in which local velocities and pressures fluctuate irregularly, in a random manner. Predictive maintenance technique that uses principles similar to those of vibration analysis to monitor the noise generated by plant machinery or systems to determine their actual operating condition. Ultrasonics is used to monitor the higher frequencies (i.e., ultrasound) that range between 20,000 Hertz and 100 kiloHertz. 

In typical cause-and-effect fashion, these particular problems stem from less than satisfactory boiler waterside conditions and have their origins in any of several, often interrelated, mechanical, operational, or water-steam chemistry irregularities.
