For radiation protection purposes, the biological effects of ionizing radiation are grouped into two main categories, the stochastic and deterministic effects. In both cases, the effects are related to the absorbed doses. Therefore, the knowledge on the dose-response relationships is essential for risk assessment. 

The biological effects of ionizing radiation for radiation protection considerations are grouped into two categories the deterministic and the stochastic ones (O Fig. 47.9). 

As previously stated, the process of ionization changes atoms and molecules. If cellular damage does occur and is not adequately repaired, it may prevent the cell from surviving or reproducing, or it may result in a viable, but modified cell. Radiation-induced effects of concern in emergency response fall into two general categories deterministic and stochastic effects.
