Laboratory automation in pharmaceutical analysis attained maturity since robots first appeared in pharmaceutical laboratories more than 20 years ago. While automation offers great promise for improving sample throughput and reducing sample backlog, its implementation has not been without problems. The industry cannot invest heavily in tools that produce little return on investment. Strategies in key aspects of automation such as planning, vendor selection, personnel, and efficient use of systems can determine the success or failure of an automation project.

Any investment strategy has some risk. Even if you put your savings in a safe deposit box, you will lose as inflation erodes its purchasing power. To earn a positive net rate of return, you must take some risk. 

Four factors should be considered when deciding on your investment strategy. Here are a few thoughts on each.

More than ever before, an industrial gases company needs to learn to develop a competitive investment strategy under conditions of uncertainty. It must identify these uncertainties, assess future market scenarios and their implications, and explicitly consider the roles it might play in influencing these scenarios. The company then must create a strategic portfolio that involves a combination of actions that, collectively, are robust enough to respond to the uncertainty in the marketplace and actively manage this portfolio as uncertainties resolve themselves and the marketplace evolves. 

Companies must continue cost reduction efforts in production and distribution and - given the high capital intensity of the industry - develop competitive investment strategies.

Management must develop a clear and consistent corporate perspective for China. This should start with a dear vision on strategic priorities based on the opportunities and threats, and should include growth and sales share targets. It is likely that there might be different sources of the substance for which a standard has been set, each requiring different approaches to control each of those sources. Thus, there is a need to consider the optimum distribution of costs in an equitable way — those responsible for the greatest impact should bear the larger part of the cost.
