Inverse UPS

The unoccupied part of the density of states can also be measured, by a technique called Inverse UPS (Sometimes also referred to as BIS, Bremsstrahlung Isochromat Spectroscopie). Here a beam of low energy electrons falls on the surface, where they go into the unoccupied states and fall back to the Fermi level, under emission of a quantum hv. Measurement of this radiation as a function of the incident electron energy gives the density of unoccupied states. This technique falls outside the scope of this book. Up-conversion and excited state absorption are the main gain-limiting factors in Er111-doped planar optical amplifiers, either glass- or polymer-based. Up-conversion increases the pump power required to achieve a certain degree of population inversion, up to factors...

The calculated data for the oeeupied and unoccupied DOS have been shifted independently on the energy seale to align with the experimental features. The ability of the calculated DOS to prediet the features in the spectra is clearly remarkable.

Only very limited Intoimtion on temperature stratification above 2 feet is available at HAFO. The observations indicate that temperature inversions up to 10 000 feet MSL are very rare during late springy summer> and early fall but are quite frequent during the colder season.
