Interhalogen compounds bromine pentafluoride

Carbon monoxide is a highly flammable and poisonous gas. Its flammable limits in air are 12.5 to 74.2% by volume, and the autoignition temperature 700°C. It explodes when exposed to flame. Reactions with interhalogen compounds, such as, bromine pentafluoride or halogen oxides can cause explosion. It forms explosive products with sodium or potassium that are sensitive to heat and shock. 

Fluorine also reacts with other halogens, forming interhalogen compounds. While with bromine and iodine it reacts vigorously at ordinary temperatures, with chlorine the reaction occurs at 200°C. Such interhalogen products with these halogens include iodine heptafluoride, bromine trifluoride, bromine pentafluoride, and chlorine trifluoride. Metalloid elements, such as arsenic, silicon, selenium, and boron also inflame in a stream of fluorine, forming fluorides. 

SAFETY PROFILE Inhalation of the fumes can produce a febrile reaction and leucocytosis in humans. Questionable carcinogen with experimental tumorigenic data. Many inorganic and organic chemicals are irritants to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Concentrated acids and bases are highly corrosive. Highly water-reactive substances such as bromine pentafluoride or other interhalogen compounds can bum the skin. 

The electronic configuration of halogens shows that there are seven electrons in the outermost shell of these atoms. Thus the most common valence state is 1. Although uncommon, halogens exhibit higher valencies, too, especially in interhalogen compounds. For example, in bromine pentafluoride and iodine heptafluoride, bromine and iodine exhibit valencies of 5 and 7, respectively. 

The interhalogen compounds are highly reactive substances, especially those containing fluorine. Chlorine trifluoride (CIFj) of b.p. 11°C is in many respects more reactive than fluorine and flames instantaneously not only with many organic substances but even with aluminum oxide and magnesium oxide. Similar in behavior is bromine trifluoride (BrF ) of m.p. 8.8 C and b.p. IBSX. Other interhalogen compounds, all very reactive, are CIF, BrF, BrF, IFj, and IF,. More recently discovered was the compound chlorine pentafluoride (ClF ) of m.p, approximately — 103"C and a b.p. of — 18.1 C.
