Another example is the interdisciplinary laboratory developed at Harvey Mudd College (147) in which eight different interdisciplinary experiments, ranging from thermal properties of an ectothermic animal to synthesis and characterization of liquid crystals, are carried out over two semesters.

We would like to thank the contributors to this volume for participating in this ongoing plastics conversation and interdisciplinary experiment. We would also like to thank the Centre for the Study of Invention and Social Process, the Department of Sociology and the Department of Design at Goldsmiths, University of London, and the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland, for funding provided in support of the initial Accumulation event in June 2011, and this subsequent publication. 

An innovative program, even while seeking solutions to recognized problems and achieving substantial success, raises a host of concerns in the minds of faculty and administrators. These must be openly addressed. Experience with other interdisciplinary programs has evoked similar concerns, and similar experience with their resolution ( 3, 4, 5). Brief overviews of primary areas of concern are presented here. 

Curricular Questions. There is a serious question as to what represents the proper balance between depth and breadth. An infinite variation in ratios is possible. Tension between advocates of different positions may always be a fact of life for any interdisciplinary program. If UCLA experience is a worthwhile guide, different proportions, but all in a middle band and built on a solid Master s-level foundation, may prove appropriate for individual students and their ultimate careers. 

Student Relationships. Establishing and retaining the identity of students in an interdisciplinary program can be a concern, deriving from reward structure, recognition, jobs, etc., in the outside world. If our experience is a useful...
