Interdigitated electrode structures

In the case of an anay of band electrodes or interdigitated electrode structures, the width of each single electrode element and the gap between the electrode elements must be considered carefully in the sensor design. Interactions between electrode elements and their effects on the transient response to a potential step perturbation will directly affect the overall sensor output. When an interdigitated electrode structure is used, chemical cross-talk among the reactants and products in both electrode elements (cathode and anode) may occur, which will then influence the sensor output [3], Therefore, the relative location of the sensing elements is also an essential consideration. 

The first SC-SOFCs with coplanar electrodes were fabricated by painting electrodes with a brush onto the electrolyte, yielding inter-electrode gaps and electrode widths larger than 0.5 mm [9]. Interdigitated electrode patterns were not fabricated by this method. Cells with side-by-side anode and cathode and cells with interdigitated electrode structures were also prepared by screen printing...

Filters and delay lines of the form shown in Fig. 6.34(b) are made which exploit the surface acoustic wave (see Section 6.5.2 above). The SAW is propagated in the direction normal to the overlap of the interdigitated electrodes, the wavelength launched being related to the electrode spacing and width. For a combined space and half-width of 15 /nn (2sulfacc = 30 /nn) the structure will propagate a centre frequency of 100 MHz. That is it operates as a filter. 

For the characterization of the trap levels we applied the thermally stimulated current technique following the initial rise method [26] which was successfully applied to other conjugated polymers [27].
