Detailed x-ray diffraction studies on polar liquid crystals have demonstrated tire existence of multiple smectic A and smectic C phases [M, 15 and 16]. The first evidence for a smectic A-smectic A phase transition was provided by tire optical microscopy observations of Sigaud etal [17] on binary mixtures of two smectogens. Different stmctures exist due to tire competing effects of dipolar interactions (which can lead to alternating head-tail or interdigitated stmctures) and steric effects (which lead to a layer period equal to tire molecular lengtli). These... [Pg.2546]

A compound which is a good choice for an artificial electron relay is one which can reach the reduced FADH2 active site, undergo fast electron transfer, and then transport the electrons to the electrodes as rapidly as possible. Electron-transport rate studies have been done for an enzyme electrode for glucose (G) using interdigitated array electrodes (41). The following mechanism for redox reactions in osmium polymer—GOD biosensor films has... [Pg.45]

Bulk and surface imprinting strategies are straightforward tools to generate artificial antibodies. Combined with transducers such as QCM (quartz crystal microbalance), SAW (surface acoustic wave resonator), IDC (interdigital capacitor) or SPR (surface plasmon resonator) they yield powerful chemical sensors for a very broad range of analytes. [Pg.298]

Figure 16.10 The arms of all 60 C subunits in tomato bushy stunt virus form an internal framework, (a) Configuration of interdigitated arms from the three C subunits, viewed down a threefold axis. The p strands are shown as arrows, (b) Cutaway view of the virus particle, emphasizing the framework function of the C-subunit arms. These arms are shown as chains of small balls, one per residue. The region where three arms meet and interdigitate is shown schematically in (a). The main part of each subunit is represented by large balls. Only about one hemisphere of these is drawn, but all the C-subunit arms are included. In developing criteria for the ranking of adhesive formulations or adherend surface treatments or primers, it is necessary to distinguish between two different situations. In one case (contact adhesion), a true interface is believed to exist across which intermolecular forces are engaged, while in the other, an interphase is formed by diffusive interpenetration or interdigitation between the adhesive and the adherend (diffusion interphase adhesion). Even in the case of contact adhesion, more often than not, an mi vphase of macroscopic thickness forms on... [Pg.67]

Ruths and Granick [95] have studied the self-adhesion of several monolayers and adsorbed polymers onto mica. For loose-packed monolayers, the adhesion, in excess of a constant value observed at low rate, increased as a power law with the square root of the separation rate. In the case of adsorbed diblocks, the excess adhesion increased linearly with logarithmic separation rate. The time effects were ascribed to interdigitation and interdiffusion between the contacting layers. [Pg.111]
