The XtraFOOD model was developed within the framework of a research project initiated by the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) [69]. The model calculates transfer of contaminants in the primary food chain (Fig. 8). In the project, the transfer model was coupled with historical food consumption data to estimate human exposure to contaminated food products. The model focuses on the terrestrial food chain. The Central Chemical Laboratory (CLCh) is the primary analytical facility of the Polish Geological Institute (PIG) and carries out practically all the chemical analysis at PIG. CLCh took part in the INCO-COPERNICUS Project Development of Analytical Procedures to Guarantee Quality Assurance in International Environmental Monitoring . CLCh participated in numerous international inter-laboratory comparisons as well as organized various inter-laboratory comparatives and proficiency testing studies for laboratories of Provincial Environment Protection Inspectorates. In March 2000, CLCh was granted the Certificate of Testing Laboratory Accreditation, with respect to physical and chemical analyses of water. 

Out of this vision, powerful institutions of international development emerged snch as World Bank, hitemational Monetary Fnnd (IMF), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), US Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Peace Corps. All of these either employed engineers or fnnded engineering projects in private companies contracted to carry ont development projects.
