Intensive care units rehabilitation

After a week in the intensive-care unit, the patient was transferred to a stepdown unit and was switched to a standard polymeric EN formula. He required 3 weeks of inpatient care owing to complications from his injuries, including seizures and a wound infection. He eventually was transferred to a rehabilitation facility still requiring EN. 

Outline a monitoring plan for tolerance of the EN regimen in the intensive-care unit, stepdown unit, and rehabilitation facility. 

The good agreement between sensor and laboratory results proves the effectiveness of the pre-calibration procedure and sensor stability. The results suggest that these devices can be used for short term glucose-lactate monitoring in for example the intensive care unit, the operation theater, in sports, medicine, rehabilitation and in diabetology. 

LT patients require 7-10 days in an intensive care unit and about 3 weeks in a normal ward of the hospital. The patient is usually fully rehabilitated after 6 months. Subsequent to inpatient treatment, follow-up therapy is carried out at a rehabilitation clinic which is specialized in hepatology. Generally, this stationary rehabilitation phase lasts 4-6 weeks and includes various tasks and objectives, (s. tab. 40.17)...

Most patients requiring PMV do not need the sophisticated monitoring available in the intensive care unit (ICtJ). However, they are often obliged to remain in the ICU due to their need for PMV. This results in a disproportionately high number of ICU beds occupied by patients requiring PMV, beds that are therefore unavailable for acutely ill patients, requiring intensive care. It also results in patients who are clinically stable and alert, but ventilator dependent, being housed in an environment with at best a minimal rehabilitative focus. 

The 1960s witnessed the continued support of some polio patients at home, as well as the introduction of mouthpiece ventilation for long term, even continuous, support at some specialized rehabilitation hospitals (4). The 1960s also ushered in intensive care units (ICUs) that served as specialized centers to treat patients with acute respiratory failure. Sophisticated mechanical ventilators were developed to treat these patients. Some of whom failed to wean and often spent weeks or months in these units because no other facilities were available to adequately care for them.
