Intensity statistics

The analysis may be extended to the use of absorption lines, other line shapes, and, most important, spectra comprising many lines of varying intensity whose intensity statistics are available.

A space group ambiguity is resolved by intensity statistics alone.

Modest though the resolution increase from 1.5 A to 1.3 A might seem, it represents an increase in the number of reflections for model refinement of (1.5/1.3) 3= 1.54 (see table 2.5). In addition, the intensity statistics up to 1.5 A resolution were better with the SRS data.

Other tests based on intensity statistics have been proposed (e.g. see Rees, 1980 Yeates, 1997 (www.doe-mbi.ucla.edu/Services/Twinning) Kahlenberg, 1999 Kahlenberg and Messner, 2001). Nevertheless, the use of the mean E — 11 is particularly simple, because it is a single number and is often calculated by data reduction and direct methods programs.
