INTELLIGENT MATERIAL Subject

If required in a specific measure, then relevant food contact materials (FCM) shall be accompanied with a declaration of compliance, while appropriate documents shall be provided to relevant authorities to demonstrate such compliance. As most of the requirements in the framework regulation are applicable to all FCM, active and intelligent materials are subject to these rules as they can be considered FCM. In some cases there may be no direct contact with the food, e.g., intelligent packaging positioned on the outside of the primary package, but they are subject to the framework regulation for the reliability of the information provided to the consumer. 

A complete factorial experimental plan is just that, in some sense complete. It provides enough information to allow one to assess (for the particular levels used) not only individual but also joint or interaction effects of the factors on the response or responses. But when in fact (unbeknownst to the investigator) a system under study is a relatively simple one, principally driven by only a few individual or low-order joint effects of the factors, fewer data actually are needed to characterize those effects adequately. So what is often done in modem practice is initially to run only a carefully chosen part of a full 2p factorial, a so-called fractional factorial plan, and to decide based on the initial data whether data from the rest of the full factorial appear to be needed in order adequately to characterize and understand response behavior. We will not discuss here the details of how so-called 2v q fractional factorials are intelligently chosen, but there is accessible reading material on the subject in books by Box, Hunter, and Hunter,19 and by Vardeman and Jobe.5... 

The only way forward is to recognize that the modern, but still developing, techniques of cell biology and molecular biology, combined intelligently with the vast information storage and computational systems which are now available, should be applied directly to human material in vitro and ex vivo, and in some situations, subject to strict ethical controls, to human volunteers. Carefully planned and executed, this approach could take account of human polymorphism, past or concurrent disease, and the differential effects of age, occupation, lifestyle, and exposure to medicines and other chemicals. 

Mr. Breckenridge argued that not only was there abundant material for every member to inform himself as to the facts necessary to reach an intelligent conclusion, but if the committee had heard one party, it felt it would have had to hear all, and finally the gentlemen who wanted to be heard were not to come as witnesses under oath, subject to cross-examination, but to present arguments prepared for the purpose of influencing the Committe to legislate in their particular interests. ... 

The selection of information provided in this book has been made with a view toward giving the reader an efficient, intelligent overall insight without having to wade through voluminous texts or handbooks in specific areas. It is not the purpose of the book to provide an exhaustive treatise on any subject, as it is assumed that the reader will consult more comprehensive and detailed texts, journals, and even the producers of materials and processing equipment for such specific and in-depth information. However, this book should make the journey to acquire such information easier and more efficient.
