Fig. 4.13 The coulomb integral a is most simply (but not too accurately) viewed as the energy of an electron in a carbon 2p orbital, relative to its energy an infinite distance away. The bond integral (resonance integral) / is most simply (but not too accurately) viewed as the energy of an electron in an MO formed by adjacent 2p orbitals, relative to its energy an infinite distance away... Natural gadolinium is a non-l/v absorber, due primarily to the presence of large thermal resonances at 0.0268 and 0.0314 ev. Gadolinium has an 0.0253 ev absorption cross section of about 49,000 b, which falls off much faster than 1/v to about 110 b at 0.625 ev. The integrated resonance absorption is estimated to be less than 400 barns. Diffusion theory calculations using these gadolinium constants were done for comparison with experimental results. [Pg.100]

Reactivity control on the order of the mean neutron lifetime (e.g., lO " seconds) is achievable from material expansion from the fuel and from the integral resonance absorbers that can be included in the fuel. [Pg.77]
