Integration into Systems

Nature achieves intelligent behavior by assembling appropriate molecules in a more sophisticated and timely fashion than we humans have been able to achieve artificially to date. Macromolecular structures may be integrated into systems composed of numerous other inorganic materials or, preferably as nature does, the active (organic) components may create the required mechanical structure. The molecular approach to the development of synthetic intelligent systems involves the design and assembly of appropriate molecules to produce the properties required to sense, process, and respond to information. [Pg.4]

To the extent that policies, standards, and procedures, or their implementation, are less than adequate, hazards that derive from design and engineering, operations management, and task performance practices will have been integrated into systems and processes, over time. [Pg.447]

Fuel cells themselves were invented over 170 years ago, with the first fuel ceU demonstrated by Sir William Robert Grove in 1839. The first commercial use of a PEM fuel cell in a system occurred when General Electric developed the technology with NASA and McDonnell Aircraft for use in the Gemini space program. Since then, fuel cells have been integrated into systems intended for a wide variety of applications, from fuel cells of just a few watts for portable appUcatiOTi, to hundreds of kilowatts for applications in transportation. [Pg.434]
