Integrated optical system

Problems associated with inadequate lifetimes are best overcome with mass-produced miniaturized replacement sensors based on inexpensive materials. Minimizing replacement costs may well represent the future of biosensors. Installation of a new sensor to replace one that is worn-out can also circumvent surface fouling, interfering layers of proteins, and certain drift and poisoning problems. The integrated optical system lOS developed at the ICB Muenster and described in Section 28.3.3.2 has shown for the first time how to work with pre-calibrated low-cost immuno-chips with long storage capability. 

Foturan is produced by the Schott Glaswerke and mtg mikroglas technik AG, both in Mainz, Germany. The material is used in automotive and precision engineering. Furthermore, Foturan is particularly suitable for microoptic and integrated optic systems. Microchannels in optical fibers, ink-jet printer heads, substrates for pressure sensors, and acoustic systems in headphones are additional applications.

Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MOEMS) will be widely integrated in new astronomical instruments for future Extremely Large Telescopes, as well as for existing lOm-class telescopes. Many integrated optical sensing systems have been designed, realized and tested in the laboratories but only a few of them have reached the market.
