Integrated circuits, manufacture, unit

Although more than 100 individual process steps are used in the manufacture of even simple integrated circuits, the fabrication sequence invokes many of the same operations numerous times. A list of unit operations that compose the technological arsenal for the fabrication of solid-state materials and devices can be made. Clearly, these unit operations are distinctly different from those associated with traditional chemical manufacture. Nevertheless, the purpose of defining such a list is the same to establish the necessary chemical and physical operations so that a complicated process may be designed and carried out from individual, more easily controlled... [Pg.37]

The fabrication of integrated circuits can be divided in a series of individual unit processes utilized in the manufacturing process. To control these unit processes the fundamental physical and chemical phenomena need to be fully understood. The present technology for making integrated circuits is versatile, but much remains to be done to fully exploit some of the unit processes and to develop new processes to produce cheaper and electronically superior chips for future applications. [Pg.10]

The chapters in this volume present a cross section of some of the most important areas of study in the fabrication of integrated circuits. Many of the chapters are reviews, and the book gives an overview of many areas important in the manufacture of integrated circuits. Both experts and novices will find material in this text that will increase their knowledge of the phenomena occurring in the unit processes. [Pg.355]

Two different chromatography detector and recorder combinations were utilized by these workers. One unit incorporated a Gow-Mac thermistor cell (9677-AEL) with a circuit control unit built by the Loe Engineering Co., Pasadena, California (Loe drawing E-26-0). A Bristol recorder (Model 56) with a 1-mv span was used. The other chromatograph arrangement consists of a Loenco unit (Model lA) used in conjunction with a Brown-Hone3nArell recorder No, 143 and a Model Kl 3 Disc Integrator manufactured by Disc Instruments, Santa Ana, California,... [Pg.96]

Microchip A microchip or a chip is a unit of packaged computer circuitry (integrated circuit) that is manufactured from a material such as silicon at a very small scale. Microchips are made for program logic (microprocessor chips) and for computer memory. [Pg.510]

Semiconductor devices are manufactured in a series of physical and/or chemical batch unit operations. An integrated circuit or semiconductor consists of several layers of carefully patterned thin films, each chemically altered to achieve desired electrical characteristics (Badgwell et al., 1995). From 30 to 300 separate steps (such as deposition, etching, and lithography) over a total duration of two months cycle time) are typically required to construct a set of circuits (devices). The wafers range in size up to 300 mm in diameter and are 400 to 700 microns thick. [Pg.442]
