A general evaluation of the integrated absorption intensity is rather difficult, but a useful result can be obtained under the following conditions (Margulies and Ehrman 1961). [Pg.1391]

However, central to any truly accurate determination of the radiative rate are the integrated absorption (emission) intensities, A", which for gaseous ions are almost completely unknown as are, usually, the vibrational frequencies. Fortunately, however, ab initio and density functional methods have recently been shown to be quite accurate in their predictions of vibrational spectra for a wide variety of systems, and there is no reason to suspect that this accuracy would not carry over to comparable data for gaseous ions. The one caveat must be that the low-frequency modes that are common in cluster ions will be decidedly anharmonic, and prediction of both these frequencies and their intensities may be suspect. However, these modes are not generally expected to be dominant contributors to the overall radiative rate. In addition, standard RRKM procedures can be applied to the unimolecular dissociation of the same adduct ions and, in principle therefore, the overall kinetics of formation of stabilized association complexes can be accurately modeled. [Pg.61]

One measure of the intensity of a transition is the maximum value of the molar absorption coefficient, f ax- However, because absorption bands generally spread over a range of wavenumbers, the absorption at a single wavenumber might not give a true indication of the intensity. The first pH indicators studied possessed the acid-base site (phenol, aniline, or carboxylic acid) as an integral part of the fluorophore. Structurally, in the most general sense, pH sensitivity is due to a reconfiguration of the fluorophorets re-electron system that occurs on protonation. Biomarkers of exposure are an indicator of absorbed dose and may present unique advantages in exposure assessment. Biomarkers demonstrate that internal exposure has occurred and can be used to estimate chemical uptake over time and help establish the relationship between exposure and effect. They are apical in nature, in that they account for and integrate over all sources of exposure. Specifically in relation to potentially sensitive subpopulations like children, biomarkers may be able to identify increased absorption or biological response in comparison with the general population. Biomarker data alone cannot be used to establish source and route of exposure and are limited in providing information on frequency, duration, and intensity.
