Install flame arresters on atmospheric vents to prevent fire on the outside of the tank from propagating back into the vapor space inside the tank. Provide fire resistant insulation for critical vessels, piping, outlet valves on tanks, valve actuators, instruments lines, and key electrical facilities. Provide remote controlled, automatic, and fire-actuated valves to stop loss of tank contents during an emergency provide fire protection to these valves. Valves should be close-coupled to the tank, and must be resistant to corrosion or other deleterious effects of spilled fluids. Vessels should be provided with overpressure relief protection. [Pg.46]

Elydranlic (liquid seal) flame arresters require attention on a regular basis similar to that for dry-type flame arresters. It is critical to ensnre that the liquid level is at the required height, and level instmmentation with alarms is recommended. Automatic addition of makeup liquid (to replace evaporation and entrainment losses) is desirable. Temperatnre instrumentation is also recommended to monitor the occurrence of sustained burning (a stabilized flame). See Section 5.3.18 for more details. [Pg.142]

Detonation arresters are typically used in conjunction with other measures to decrease the risk of flame propagation. For example, in vapor control systems, the vapor is often enriched, diluted, or inerted, with appropriate instrumentation and control (see Effluent Disposal Systems, 1993). In cases where ignition sources are present or pre-dic table (such as most vapor destruct systems), the detonation arrester is used as a last-resort method anticipating possible failure of vapor composition control.
