In the 1960s, the Institute of Marine Research (IfM) started investigations to find comparable measures for the identification of MBIs and carried out the statistical analysis of the characteristic properties of the water penetrating during MBIs. 

The Institute of Marine Research and later the Baltic Sea Research Institute in War-nemiinde were laigely involved in investigations of the analysis of specific inflows of highly saline water and the study of the water renewals in the central Baltic, as well as on the stagnation periods following these events in the central Baltic deep water.

In 1990, the Institute of Marine Research, Bergen, Norway, started regular sampling of sediments and water close to the wreck of Komsomolets. Values of Cs were in the range 1-10 Bq per kg dry weight sediment and 1-30 Bq per m water. No trends were found in the contamination as the variation between samples taken at the same date were equal to the variation observed from year to year. Detectable amounts of " Cs in the sediment samples indicate that there is some leaching of radioactivity from the reactor.

Analyser systems are available commercially but may also be constructed from single components according to individual requirements. A typical system for the automated analysis of seawater constituents consists of a sampler, proportioning pump, the analytical manifold (a delay and reaction system), a flow-through spectrophotometer and a data acquisition system. Fig. 10-13 shows a 4-channel CFA system built and used in the Institute of Marine Research in Kiel (Germany). One example manifold (nitrate) including a flow-through-spectrophotometer is displayed in Fig.10-14.
