The deciding impulse which introduced biogenesis into scientific discussion came from Russia. After the upheavals of the civil war, that country was the subject of worried observation by the rest of the world. It was assumed that no great scientific achievements would be possible there. Then, in 1924, a book on the material basis of the origin of life on Earth appeared in Red Russia . Its author was Alexandr Ivanovich Oparin (1894-1980) from the Bakh Institute of Biochemistry in Moscow (Oparin, 1924). Basically, the Oparin hypothesis makes the following assumptions ... [Pg.11]

The dipole moment of cytosine has been calculated many times by different methods. Until very recently, no experimental data were available on this subject. A short time ago, an attempt was undertaken at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, to measure the dipole moments of cytosine, of a number of its derivatives, and of some cytidines. Table X collects the preliminary results of these measurements. As we see, the value of the dipole moment of cytosine is relatively large (> 6.0 D), probably about... [Pg.241]

All figures presented for cytosines are unpublished data measured by I. Kulakowska and K. L. Wierzchowski, and those for cytosine nucleosides by I. Kulakowska and A. Rabczenko (Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Polish Academy of Science, Warsaw). b Uncertain value. [Pg.242]
