Inferno

Scientists identified the first carbon nanotubes in 1991. They sealed two graphite rods inside a container of helium gas and sent an electric discharge from one rod to the other. Much of one rod evaporated, but out of the inferno some amazing structures emerged (see illustrations). As well as the tiny 60-atom carbon spheres known as buckminsterfullerene—which had been known since 1985—long, hollow, perfectly straight carbon nanotubes were detected.

The bright garment of the great lantern hides its true nature. Now ageing, under a serene countenance, the Sun still carries a blazing inferno in its core. It owes its great age mainly to its gaseous flexibility. In contrast, the sclerotic heart of certain stars condemns them to explosion or to some other separation of core and envelope.

Not only with authorities who were concerned with the protection of the stability of state coinage and currency from the feared debasement by false gold, but with the cultivated classes quite generally the alchemists were held in evil repute. Dante (about 1300) in his Divina Corn-media pictures them in the tortures of the deepest regions of the Inferno Petrarch (in 1366) satirizes their deceptions and Chaucer in his Canterbury Tales (about 1388) voices the low estimate in which the alchemists were held.

Earlier calculation on many electron atomic systems under plasma was performed by Stewart and Pyatt [58], who estimated the variation of IP of several atoms using a finite temperature TF model. Applications of the density functional theory on these systems were reviewed by Gupta and Rajagopal [57], The calculations on many electron systems are mostly concerned with the hot and dense plasmas with the application of the IS model, or from general solutions of the Poisson equation for the potential function. Scottish scholar and translator of Aristotle. He served the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II as court astrologer, and has the distinction of appearing as a character in both Dante s Inferno and Boccaccio s Decameron. He was an accomplished hypnotist, a skill he is said to have learned from the Sufis.

From our experience the largest difficulty (or activation barrier) that homogeneous chemists encounter in trying to deal with the electrochemical literature is directly related to electrochemical jargon rather than to fundamental concepts. Although electrochemistry was born as a synthetic method (by Kolbe, Haber, and Fichter, among others), most electrochemical textbooks use an analytic approach to these fundamental concepts. As a result, mathematical formulations and jargon invade most of the presentations, which often results in an effect similar to the caveat at the entrance of Dante s Inferno ...
