Restraining a gaseous plasma from expanding and compressing is also a form of plasma modification. Two reasons for plasma confinement are maintenance of the plasma and exclusion of contaminants. Plasmas may be confined by surrounding material, eg, the technique of wall confinement (23). A second approach to confinement involves the use of magnetic fields. The third class of confinement schemes depends on the inertial tendency of ions and associated electrons to restrain a plasma explosion for a brief but usehil length of time, ie, forces active over finite times are required to produce outward particle velocities. This inertial confinement is usually, but not necessarily, preceded by inward plasma motion and compression. [Pg.110]

Pulsed plasmas containing hydrogen isotopes can produce bursts of alpha particles and neutrons as a consequence of nuclear reactions. The neutrons are useful for radiation-effects testing and for other materials research. A dense plasma focus filled with deuterium at low pressure has produced 10 neutrons in a single pulse (76) (see Deuterium AND TRITIUM). Intense neutron fluxes also are expected from thermonuclear fusion research devices employing either magnetic or inertial confinement. [Pg.114]

Inertial confinement fusion has long succeeded in the context of militai y explosions—the hydrogen bomb. In the militai y application a fission bomb produces x-rays that drive an implosion of D-T fuel to enormous temperatures and densities such that fusion reactions occur during the short time that inertia keeps the fusing nuclei densely packed and hot. [Pg.875]

Much of the driver energy goes into ablation, or blowing-off the surface of the sphere of fuel to force the compression (implosion) by the rocket effect. As a result, the ntT needed for scientific break-even for inertial confinement is around twenty times higher than for magnetic confinement. [Pg.876]

We are applying the principles of statistical experimental design to the development of low-density polymer foams for use as direct-drive high-gain targets for Laser Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF). Both polystyrene (PS) and resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) foams are being developed. [Pg.74]

The gas-phase decomposition of beryllocenes has been examined for the doping of semiconductor materials and in the preparation of thin metal films. Molecular-beam expitaxy has been used with (MeC5H4)2Be to dope InP semiconductors only a small amount of carbon is found in the doped films.54 Beryllocene 9 has been explored as a precursor for coating capsules with beryllium metal for use as targets in experiments with inertial confinement fusion.55... [Pg.73]

Means to confine the plasma have been ihe major objective of fusion power research in several countries for a number of years. Methods researched lor confining the plasma include the use of strong magnetic fields and inertial confinement methods in which the fuel is pelletized in a special way and fusion reactions are initiated either by laser beams, beams of panicles, and heating the plasma with high power microwave radiation.2 Other means are being researched. [Pg.695]

Inertial Confinement. In the inertial approach, the fuel is heated as it is compressed to a very high density, estimated at about I(KK) times that or the normal density of the solid fuel. An intense energy source is focused onto Ihe outer surface of a specially formed spherical pellet. This produces ablation on the outer surface somewhat similar lo the ablation of a rocket as it is exposed to extremely high temperatures. The energy also causes an implosion (an inward bursting) of the deuterium-tritium fuel mixture in the inneT portion of Ihe pellet. The compression process heats the fuel to ignition temperature and also contributes to the quantity of fuel that can be burned. Inasmuch as the compressed fuel is restrained by its own inertia, the fuel hums before it can fly apart. This is a time span of a billionth of a second or less. ... [Pg.697]
