Induction coils

The sample should be liquid or in solution. It is pumped and nebulized in an argon atmosphere, then sent through a plasma torch that is, in an environment where the material is strongly ionized resulting from the electromagnetic radiation produced by an induction coil. Refer to the schematic diagram in Figure 2.8. 

A special coil configuration is used to heat thin strips of metal that caimot be heated efficiently with a coil that encircles the load, as the strip thickness is small compared to the depth of penetration. The transverse flux induction coil is positioned on either side of a strip to produce a uniformly heated strip with good efficiency in a much smaller space than conventional radiant or convective strip heating furnaces (6). 

The length of the zone and the diameter of the tod are chosen in such a way that surface tension and interactions between circulating electric currents in the molten zone and the radio-frequency (r-f) field from the surrounding induction coil keep the molten zone in place. As of this writing (ca 1996), the maximum sihcon rod diameter that can be purified in this manner is ca 125 mm. Initially, additional purification can be obtained by making mote sweeps of the zone. Eventually, however, more sweeps do not remove any additional impurities. The limiting profile is given by equation 4 ...

Inductively coupled plasma Plasmas generated by application of radiofrequency power to a nonresonant inductive coil and maintained by an inductive electromagnetic field. Low-pressure ICP is a high-density plasma source. 

In the inductive mode the magnetic permeability of a solution-containing cell placed in the field of an inductance coil represents the measuring principle of the method however, this property is not very sensitive to differences in solution composition, so that the inductive mode still remains of limited applicability. 

These usually consist of a non-magnetic casing, a rotor, and an electromagnetic pickup. The rotor is either a propeller or turbine freely suspended on ball bearings in the path of the flowing fluid with the axis of rotation in line with the flow. The rotor turns in the fluid flow stream at a rate proportional to the flow rate. As the rotor turns it cuts through the lines of force of an electric field produced by an adjacent induction coil. The electrical pulse output from the induction coil pickup is amplified and fed to readout instruments or recorders to give either total flow or flow rate [Holland and Chapman (1966)].
