Indo-brown

Baphicanthus cusia (Nees.) Bremek. Ban Lan or Da Qing Ye (leaf, root) Indirubin, indigo, indo-brown, indo-yellow, isoindigo, lacerol, tryptanthrin.53 Antidotal, febrifugal, treat fever, epidemic mumps, erysipelas, rashes, sore throat. [Pg.39]

In contrast to patterns for lipophilic secondary metabolites, water-soluble phlorotannins (i.e., polyphenolics produced by brown seaweeds) were initially reported to be more abundant in temperate than tropical Indo-Pacilic seaweeds.123-125 However, this apparent latitudinal pattern has not held when tested in additional locations in the Caribbean.126127 The paucity of phlorotannins in some tropical seaweeds was attributed to their ineffectiveness against tropical herbivores,128 30 although phlorotannins from temperate seaweeds can deter some tropical herbivores.125 Because geographic patterns of phlorotannins and their impacts on herbivores are unclear, it is difficult to determine how allocation patterns of phlorotannins relate to the ODT. [Pg.334]

Top or trochus shells, ftom the mily Trochidae, are found in the Indo-Pacific region near coral reeft. The cone-shaped top, mottled top and commercial trochus have nacreous inner layers and are used in the mother-of-pearl button industry. The shells are triangular, cone shaped, with a flat base and flattened whorls. The outer shell layer of the commercial trochus is brown and white, while the others vary in colour from red to pink and white, sometimes with splashes of brown, grey, or green (Fig. 10.4). [Pg.174]

The nautilus. Nautilus pompUius, has changed little since its ancestors were around several million years ago. It is found at a depth of about 250 metres in warm seas of the Indo-Padfic region. It has a shell that is spirally coiled, with a creamy coloured periostracum with brown, zebra stripes. The centre of the whorl is a nacreous silver-blue which, when used in jewellery, is known as the coque-de-perle (Fig. 10.8). [Pg.177]

Oxidation PPD gives benzoquinone imines as a result of oxidation. The imines react rapidly with the couplers (another chemical material in the formulation) and/ or an oxidized PPD to produce indo dyes. The most frequent couplers are 2, 4-diaminoanisole (blue forming coupler), resorcinol (green brown), metami-nophenol (magenta/brown) and 1-naphtol (purple blue color). The most commonly used oxidant is hydrogen peroxide. Free ammonia is present to promote the oxidation reaction and the pH of the mixture on the dyed area is about 9.5 [3]. [Pg.872]
