Indiums reactions with

Metallic Antimonides. Numerous binary compounds of antimony with metallic elements are known. The most important of these are indium antimonide [1312-41 -0] InSb, gallium antimonide [12064-03-8] GaSb, and aluminum antimonide [25152-52-7] AlSb, which find extensive use as semiconductors. The alkali metal antimonides, such as lithium antimonide [12057-30-6] and sodium antimonide [12058-86-5] do not consist of simple ions. Rather, there is appreciable covalent bonding between the alkali metal and the Sb as well as between pairs of Na atoms. These compounds are useful for the preparation of organoantimony compounds, such as trimethylstibine [594-10-5] (CH2)2Sb, by reaction with an organohalogen compound.

The indium-mediated allylation of trifluoroacetaldehyde hydrate (R = H) or trifluoroacetaldehyde ethyl hemiacetal (R = Et) with an allyl bromide in water yielded a-trifluoromethylated alcohols (Eq. 8.56).135 Lanthanide triflate-promoted indium-mediated allylation of aminoaldehyde in aqueous media generated (i-airiinoalcohols stereoselectively.136 Indium-mediated intramolecular carbocyclization in aqueous media generated fused a-methylene-y-butyrolactones (Eq. 8.57).137 Forsythe and co-workers applied the indium-mediated allylation in the synthesis of an advanced intermediate for azaspiracids (Eq. 8.58).138 Other potentially reactive functionalities such as azide, enone, and ketone did not compete with aldehyde for the reaction with the in situ-generated organo-indium intermediate. 

The reaction of an a-halo carbonyl compound with zinc, tin, or indium together with an aldehyde in water gave a direct cross-aldol reaction product (Eq. 8.90).226,227 A direct Reformatsky-type reaction occurred when an aromatic aldehyde reacted with an a-bromo ester in water mediated by zinc in low yields. Recently, it was found that such a reaction mediated by indium was successful and was promoted by son-ication (Eq. 8.91).228 The combination of BiCl3-Al,229 CdCl2-Sm,230 and Zn-Et3B-Eb0231 is also an effective mediator. Bismuth metal, upon activation by zinc fluoride, effected the crossed aldol reaction between a-bromo carbonyl compounds and aldehydes in aqueous media. The reaction was found to be regiospecific and syn-diastereoselective (Eq. 8.92).232... 

Allylation of acyloyl-imidazoles and pyrazoles61 with allyl halide mediated by indium in aqueous media provides a facile regioselective synthesis of P, y-unsaturated ketones (Scheme 11.1), which has been applied to the synthesis of the monoterpene artemesia ketone. The same product can be obtained by indium-mediated allylation of acyl cyanide (Eq. 11.35).62 Samarium, gallium, and bismuth can be used as a mediator for the allylation of nitrones and hydrazones to give homoallylic hydroxylamine and hydrazides in aqueous media in the presence of Bu4NBr (Scheme 11.2).63 The reaction with gallium and bismuth can be increased dramatically under microwave activation. 

Reaction with Propargyl Halides. The indium-mediated coupling of propargyl bromide with a variety of imines and imine oxides afforded homo-propargylamine derivatives in aqueous media under mild conditions.78 Propargylation of glyoxylic oxime ether in the presence of a catalytic amount of palladium(O) complex and indium(I) iodide in aqueous media was also studied (Eq.11.47).79...
