More recently, the related indium-mediated radical reactions have been widely studied (Scheme 7.13).19 Indium iodide-mediated radical cyclisation was first reported by Cook et al.20 The indium-mediated 1,4-addition of alkyl radicals to (F)-but-2-enenitrile was investigated by using 1-ethylpiperidinum hypophosphite (EPHP) as a hydrogen donor in aqueous media (Scheme 7.13).21 Atom transfer radical cyclisation and reductive radical cyclisation were studied using indium and iodine.22 Indium mediated alkyl radical addition to dehydroamino acid derivatives was also reported.23 The indium-mediated radical ring expansion of a-halomethyl cyclic (3-keto esters, shown in Scheme 7.13, was achieved in aqueous alcohols.24... 

Among the methods for the separation of small amounts of indium before its determination, the solvent extraction methods in general, and extraction of indium-iodide and -bromide complexes in particular, are of the utmost importance. 

The indium iodide complex [1-3] is > 99% extracted into diethyl ether from 0.5-2.5 M HI (6-30%). Gallium is not extracted under these conditions, but it is extracted from 6 M HCl. The hydriodic acid can be replaced by 0.5-3 M H2SO4 containing 15-20% of Kl. Chloride, bromide, fluoride, phosphate, and citrate do not interfere in the extraction of In from iodide media. Under the optimum conditions for the extraction, Tl, Cd, and Sn (and some Bi, Zn, Hg, and Sb) are extracted. Aluminium and Fe(II), like Ga, are not extracted. The indium iodide complex has also been extracted into chloroform containing N-benzylaniline [4,5]. 

Activated indium metal reacts with aryl iodides to give a good yield of diphenyl- or ditolyl-indium iodides. ...

In my attempt to extend the halogen cycle principle to arc lamps my CRC Handbook really got a workout. The search led to the use of indium iodide in an arc at moderate pressure, producing a brilliant white light. This is the principle employed in the MarcSOO Lamp. The Marc Lamp was designed for use in 16mm movie projectors, now passe, but it is possibly the first example of a useful, continuous radiation, molecular arc lamp. 

Indium metal or indium iodide as a reducing agent can be used for umpol-ung of TT-allylpalladium. Araki reported that allylic indium(III) reagents 333 are generated in situ by reductive transmetallation of r-allylpalladium with indium(I) salts [124]. Based on this reaction, nucleophilic allylation of benzaldehyde with allylic chlorides, alcohols, and esters occurred at room temperature in the presence... 

One note of caution is necessary regarding the preparation of the activated indium. Excess potassium or indium trichloride should be avoided as they can catalyze side reactions. Thus the ratio of potassium to indium trichloride should be 3 1 under these conditions GC analysis indicated little or no byproducts. Thus the use of activated indium allows the ready preparation of diaryl indium iodides directly from the aryl iodide.
