These combined HDF and GPC separations require the use of detectors such as static light scattering or viscometers to help sort out the convoluted elution profiles seen in those type of experiments. It should also be remembered in these situations that the typical refractive index or ultraviolet detector responses may not be representative of the actual mass fraction of insolubles eluting from the column because of the significant light scattering that can occur with those large particles in the detector cell. [Pg.553]

To size the fan it is necessary to know the total air volume and the pressures in the system. These are calculated from the losses in the system on the longest or index leg, and begin with the hood. The relationship between film thickness of hexadecane with the addition of cholesteryl LCs and rolling speed under different pressures is shown in Fig. 25 [50], where the straight line is the theoretic film thickness calculated from the Hamrock-Dowson formula based on the bulk viscosity under the pressure of 0.174 GPa. It can be seen that for all lubricants, when speed is high, it is in the EHL regime and a speed index 4> about 0.67 is produced. Carbon monoxide chemisorption was used to estimate the surface area of metallic iron after reduction. The quantity of CO chemisorbed was determined [6J by taking the difference between the volumes adsorbed in two isotherms at 195 K where there had been an intervening evacuation for at least 30 min to remove the physical adsorption. Whilst aware of its arbitrariness, we have followed earlier workers [6,10,11] in assuming a stoichiometry of Fe CO = 2.1 to estimate and compare the surface areas of metallic iron in our catalysts.
