If it can be shown that flavonoids do play a role in reducing the risk of cataract, they will only account for a proportion of the total effect, as many other plant constituents, such as vitamins and minerals, have also been shown to be effective. It should also be remembered that cataract is a multifactorial disease, with diet but one of many possible risk factors among, for example, poverty, UV radiation, smoking, diabetes, body mass index, age, sex, and hypertension [9], all of which may interact in a highly complex manner to facilitate development of disease. [Pg.208]

Multi-national discipline and experts were involved in constructing and assessing the international composite indices. A.K. Sen, for instance, is a Nobel Prize holder and he is one of the key developers of the Human Development Index (HDI) in terms of his theory on poverty and welfare on a global scale (Andrew, 2004). Since 1990 the "Human Development Reports" (UNDP, 2004) have measured the country s... [Pg.57]

Non-normalisation methods of data are applied when all indicators have the same scale, for instance all variables are percentage. In this case there is no dominant (does not mean important) variable in scale or unit. This technique is used by the Eluman Poverty Index (ITPl). [Pg.68]

The level of poverty can be measured by comparing the index of household welfare with a cutoff point that separates the poor from the nonpoor. This cutoff point is the poverty line, which can be monetary (for example, a certain level of consumption) or nonmonetary (for example, a certain level of literacy). Sometimes multiple lines are used to help in distinguishing among different levels of poverty. In practice, most analysts measure poverty by comparing the per capita (or per adult equivalent) consumption or income with a monetary poverty line. Households whose consumption falls below the poverty line are counted as poor. [Pg.454]

Another factor that has been examined in relation to urinary antimony levels is socioeconomic status (SES). Tyrrell and colleagues reported higher urinary antimony levels in those with lower SES (as measured by the Poverty Index Ratio) in NHANES 2001-2010 adult participants who were 18-74 years of age (Tyrrell et al. 2013). Unlike other metals evaluated in this study, the authors could not find any consistent mediator (e.g., shellfish/fish consumption, tobacco use, occupation) that would explain why urinary antimony levels varied by SES. [Pg.216]
