The book starts with a brief introduction to nanomaterials followed by chapters dealing with the synthesis, structure and properties of various types of nanostructures. There are chapters devoted to oxomolybdates, porous silicon, polymers, electrochemistry, photochemistry, nanoporous solids and nanocatalysis. Nanomanipulation and lithography are covered in a separate chapter. In our attempt to make each contribution complete in itself, there is some unavoidable overlap amongst the chapters. Some chapters cover entire areas, while others expound on a single material or a technique. Our gratitude goes to S. Roy for his valuable support in preparing the index manuscript.

The rest of my review this year will therefore concentrate on this aspect of photochemistry, with the customary apologies to those who would prefer to read about developments in, for example, mechanistic studies, ultrafast reactions or photoaffinity probes. No doubt these themes will be picked up in future volumes. As usual, the chapter and reference numbers of the publications cited in this review can be found by using the Author Index, but I have also included the chapter numbers to aid those who wish to scan for chemical structures. 

Growing interest has been focussed on transition-metal photochemistry in view of its potential relevance to the problem of solar energy fixation. Among the more general developments however, a new formalism of bond indexes proposed by Vanquickenborne and Ceulemans promises to rationalize the photochemistry of hexaco-ordinate complexes of transition metals. The ligand most readily expelled is deemed to be that having the smallest bond index. Vogler and Kunkely have...

The wide knowledge of spectroscopic and photochemical properties of these organometallics allows an intriguing comparison with the growing field of f-element photochemistry. An extensive index is provided in order to interconnect these parts and to facilitate cross referencing. 

A comprehensive review of matrix-isolation studies of organic photochemistry is not possible in a work of this type, because it would run to many hundreds — possibly thousands — of references. Fortunately, two useful bibhographies have been pubhshed the first covers the literature from the invention of the technique up to about 1985, while the second extends this period to about 1997. These bibliographies are not free of omissions and errors, nor will they be found in every library, but both contain formula and author indexes and are valuable sources of information on matrix-isolation research. An earlier bibliography, which covered IR spectra at sub-ambient temperatures, including matrix-isolation IR spectra. and an associated review of IR spectra of reactive species trapped in matrices give useful entry points to the literature up to about 1968. Also, various aspects of matrix studies in organic photochemistry have been reviewed. ...
