As in the case of density or specific gravity, the refractive index, n, for hydrocarbons varies in relation to their chemical structures. The value of n follows the order n paraffins < n naphthenes < n aromatics and it increases with molecular weight. [Pg.42]

With the accumulation of results obtained from various and complex analyses of narrow cuts (Waterman method), correlations have been found f ctween refractive index, specific gravity and molecular weight on one hand, and percentages of paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic carbon on the other. [Pg.42]

Numerous methods for the deterrnination of monomer purity, including procedures for the deterrnination of saponification equivalent and bromine number, specific gravity, refractive index, and color, are available from manufacturers (68—70). Concentrations of minor components are deterrnined by iodimetry or colorimetry for HQ or MEHQ, by the Kad-Eisher method for water, and by turbidity measurements for trace amounts of polymer. [Pg.165]

The concentration of distilled glycerol is easily determined from its specific gravity (15) by the pycnometer method (16) with a precision of 0.02%. Deterrnination of the refractive index also is employed (but not as widely) to measure glycerol concentration to 0.1% (17). [Pg.349]

Other methods are also available for the estimation of diesel fuel quaUty. For example, the diesel index (DI) is defined by the relation DI = (A° F X ° API)/100, where A °F is the aniline point in degrees Fahrenheit and °API is the American Petroleum Institute gravity. A high aniline point corresponds to a high proportion of paraffins in the diesel fuel such a fuel has a high diesel index and, therefore, a high cetane number. [Pg.211]

Strontium Sulfate. Strontium sulfate, SrSO, occurs as celestite deposits in beds or veins in sediments or sedimentary rocks. Celestite has a specific gravity of ca 3.97, a Mohs hardness of 3.0—3.5, and is colodess-to-yeUow and often pale blue. Strontium sulfate forms colorless or white rhombic crystals with a specific gravity of 3.96 and an index of refraction of 1.622—1.631. It decomposes at 1580°C and has a solubiUty of 0.0113 g per 100 mL of water at 0°C. [Pg.475]

Dimensionless Quantities. Certain quantities, eg, refractive index and relative density (formerly specific gravity), are expressed by pure numbers. In these cases, the corresponding SI unit is the ratio of the same two SI units, which cancel each other, leaving a dimensionless unit. The SI unit of dimensionless quantities may be expressed as 1. Units for dimensionless quantities such as percent and parts per million (ppm) may also be used with SI in the latter case, it is important to indicate whether the parts per million are by volume or by mass. [Pg.310]

The bulk density of cellulose acetate varies with physical form from 160 kg/m (10 lb /ft ) for soft dakes to 481 kg/m (30 lb /fT) for hammer-milled powder, whereas the specific gravity (1.29—1.30), refractive index (1.48), and dielectric constant of most commercial cellulose acetates are similar. [Pg.251]
