As in the case of density or specific gravity, the refractive index, n, for hydrocarbons varies in relation to their chemical structures. The value of n follows the order n paraffins < n naphthenes < n aromatics and it increases with molecular weight. 

With the accumulation of results obtained from various and complex analyses of narrow cuts (Waterman method), correlations have been found f ctween refractive index, specific gravity and molecular weight on one hand, and percentages of paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic carbon on the other.

Numerous methods for the deterrnination of monomer purity, including procedures for the deterrnination of saponification equivalent and bromine number, specific gravity, refractive index, and color, are available from manufacturers (68—70). Other methods are also available for the estimation of diesel fuel quaUty. For example, the diesel index (DI) is defined by the relation DI = (A° F X ° API)/100, where A °F is the aniline point in degrees Fahrenheit and °API is the American Petroleum Institute gravity. A high aniline point corresponds to a high proportion of paraffins in the diesel fuel such a fuel has a high diesel index and, therefore, a high cetane number.

Strontium Sulfate. Strontium sulfate, SrSO, occurs as celestite deposits in beds or veins in sediments or sedimentary rocks.
