C. Curtis Dissertation, Zurich-Weida, 1929. This ako gives the preparation of 1-anthraquinoneoxamic acid and of indanthrene red 5 GK. 

In an analogous manner, indanthrene red 5 GK is prepared by benzoylation of 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone (page 232), and algol yellow WG by benzoylation of 1-aminoanthraquinone (page 231). 

Technical Observations. Indantlirene red 5 GK is formed by benzoylation of 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone, and indanthrene yellow GK by benzoylation ot the 1,5 isomer.

Indanthrene Brilliant Orange can be synthesized by heating naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid with 2 moles of o-phenylenediamine. The product is a scarlet mixture (which itself is useful as a vat dye) of Indanthrene Brilliant Orange and an isomer called Indenthrene Bordeaux (red-purple). Formulate a reasonable mechanism for the formation of Indanthrene Brilliant Orange from the reaction of the tetracarboxylic acid and the diamine with attention to the possible formation of isomeric products. 

Colorless crystal needles. The anhydrous salt is stable in air. The trihydrate (flakes with a nacreous luster) and the tetra-hydrate (rhombohedral leaflets) are more labile. Soluble in H3O. The solution acts as a bleaching agent and is quite resistant to acids. The reducing activity increases markedly with temperature the rH values of a formic acid solution at pH 3 are (25 °C) 15 (50°C) 2 (90°C) a maximum of 0.5. Decomposes on prolonged boiling. The warm solution turns alkaline indanthrene yellow G paper blue and decolorizes an alcoholic solution of neutral red. 

More serious and apparently not realized until fairly recently is the toxic and potential or actual carcinogenic character of several smoke dyes—Indanthrene Golden Yellow, MIL-D-50029B the popular red dye methylamino anthraquinone, M1L-D-3284A and the much used auraraine hydrochloride. An earlier study on the subject has been issued by the Army Medical Center, Maryland. ...
